A 6-year-old city kid

Dear Maeve,

We are so proud of the little girl you are – talented, smart, loving, coordinated, and enthusiastic. We had such a happy summer, enjoying trips to Michigan, summer camps at Lill Street and the Nature Museum, and pool and beach dates with our friends, among our many adventures. You took your first (and then many!) jumps off the diving board, bravely running right off without hesitation. You also mastered riding your bike without training wheels!

You planned your whole birthday party, helping me pick out everything, from Belle on your cake and princess plates & piñata, to the art-themed activities and gifts for the guests! Your art work (especially your rainbows addressed to us and patterns) continues to inspire and impress us, and we promise to find ways to support and encourage your ability. Your confidence continued to blossom this year and it is such a joy to take you to the Chicago museums and attractions. Your current favs are the Shedd Aquarium, the zoos (Lincoln Park and Brookfield), and Garfield Park Conservatory. You walk around like you own the places!

You are now in Kindergarten and are adjusting so well already (despite the disruption of a 1.5 week strike). You are learning to navigate the school day and new routines, and Daddy and I are learning to navigate your new independence. I love that you still want me to hold your hand on the way to the door, but bravely go in without tears every day. I also love when you run off to play with Abby at pick-up without barely saying hello to me! We try to give you space and freedom of choices, but we are strict about manners and will always emphasize the importance of working hard. You can be quite a goofball though and continue to surprise us and make us laugh. We’ll eat you up we love you so!

You rocked your doctor’s appointments this week – only a flu mist and peeing in a cup at your check-up (no shots!) and were so brave during your teeth x-rays, which showed your 6-year molars hiding in there. The dentist told me that your bottom two front teeth and top two front teeth all are loose too! The tooth fairy is on alert. Check-up measurements: weight 38.5 lbs (10th); height 44.25″ (25-50th). We are so lucky to have our happy, healthy girl!

Maeve’s 1st time skiing!

We were thrilled with how well Maeve did at ski school at the Treehouse on Snowmass Mountain! We stalked her the whole time and got to see her shuffle around in her skiis, ski down the bunny hill, and ride the magic carpet ride. It was so fun to see her decked out in her goggles, helmet, boots and skiis! She never fell down and didn’t seem worried at all about trying it out. The instructor, Mary Katherine, told us after that she was “the kind of student we dream about in ski school” because she was such a good listener and so patient waiting her turn. We are so proud of her newest endeavor!!!

Potty talk

If you think our child’s bathroom issues are TMI, then we advise you to skip this milestone post…

I have never, ever been more excited about poop than I am today. I know we said Maeve pooped on the potty a long time ago, but it was like once or maybe twice and kind of an accident as it wasn’t a purposeful decision on her part. As parents, we of course wanted to give credit to that event, but today is much different.

After months of talking about it and encouraging her, but ultimately just giving her a diaper when she needed one we declared that there were no more diapers. After almost a week (she was strong, even in the face of laxative-laced smoothies), Maeve pooped in the potty today for the very first time (again)! We are desperately hoping this is the break through we’ve been waiting for.

Oh, and for those of you keeping track of the major goods I stocked the bribery bag with, she chose the rocket balloons as a reward for her success today!

Last day of school

Today was Maeve’s last day of her first academic year and our last day at Black Bear Academy. Daddy came with us for drop off this morning and we survived the day with only a few tears (mine). We are looking forward to seeing her teachers again tomorrow at the preschool’s year-end picnic to say goodbye.

She said school was “great!” and that she really enjoyed buddy day visiting Ms. Megan’s class. I watched her on the closed circuit TV (I will miss that!) participating well at snack time, helping the teacher select a book for story time, and shouting out her number rhymes during circle time! Her list of accomplishments throughout the year are many (maybe I will attempt a summary in another post), and Chris and I are so proud of her growth and courage this year.

After lunch, we celebrated with a trip to Baskin Robbins!

Reading

Maeve has been sounding out letters and “reading” her favorite books to herself (from memory) for a long time. We are hoping to foster a love of learning – what parent isn’t? – and we love the opportunities she has at home and at school to develop her language and reading skills. But today was a break through…as we were driving up Western Ave. this afternoon, without any prompting, pointing, or question from me, Maeve sounded out and read the word BIG on this sign! She sounded out the letters, said the word “big,” and then compared it to the word pig “but big has a Buh sound, not a Puh sound.” She’s brilliant, but of course we already knew this!

Maeve read this!

P.S. I should add that Maeve can read Exit and One Way signs too, but she asked what they were to begin with so I still think the Big billboard should count as the first spontaneous read…

Big Girl Bed!!!

Maeve spent her first nap and overnight in her big girl bed yesterday and she did great! We set up my old full mattress on the floor in her room and left the bar down on her crib so she could choose where she wanted to sleep. She seemed really excited about the bed right away! Of course, she got up a number of times because she could and I had to take away some items (a flashlight, a puzzle)…but eventually fell asleep for her nap.

First nap in big girl bed

At bed time she was restless again, so we went back up a couple of times. The last time I went she told me she didn’t want her flashlight because it was making scary shapes on the ceiling. I thought she fell asleep after that, only to come upstairs later to find her door open, a cat on her bed and Maeve in ours! ADORABLE. Chris carried her back to hers where she slept on her own until 7:30 a.m. – we continue to be so proud of our big girl!!!

Kicking off the holiday season in style…

We are officially in the holiday spirit now! We got our tree up and decorated last weekend, but Maeve did some extra special paper chains this weekend with her Grandma and Nanna. They were in town to take Maeve to the Walnut Room at Macy’s, where we sat under the big tree. We also rode the Holiday Train, an el train that is all lit up and decorated with a flat bed car for Santa and his reindeer. Maeve loved the “sparkly train!”

The rest of this week had been a busy one – we celebrated the first snow of the season which Maeve thought was delicious. She also had a great week at her Little Gym class – she was a great listener and is starting to participate with the teacher a bit on her own. This week she used the drum sticks and followed along with the instructions while I sat by the wall, and she did many straddle rolls all by herself throughout class! We have enjoyed playdates with friends and baking Christmas cookies too.

It snowed! This snow is great!Christmas cookies

The two major accomplishments of the week are that we moved Maeve into her new purple room, which was completed on Tuesday with the installation of the carpet, and she is wearing underwear and using the potty very consistently!

Lounging in her new room

Maeve immediately did somersaults on her new carpet and enjoyed running around her room before we moved the furniture in, and she hasn’t had any trouble adjusting to sleeping in there. I thought it was really funny that she woke up after the 1st night in her new room saying “there’s no S on the wall” (the alphabet animals in her nursery are not yet moved). We will add a mattress after Christmas so she can start to think about choosing to sleep in a big bed!

Maeve has been doing a great job using the potty at home and has begun to independently realize she has to go without us asking her. She even had her first successful public restroom experience at dinner with Nanna and me at Caro Mio on Friday night. She told me she had to go twice and did a great job both times! She pooped on the potty today and was awarded a candy cane even though it was breakfast time…we are so proud. We know that accidents will happen and I’m not looking forward to stopping more often on our upcoming car trips, but so far we are thrilled with how well it is going!

Our art class is over for the year, but we will start up again next month and will also be participating in a family ceramics class on Saturdays so that Chris can join us for one of Maeve’s favorite activities! We are off to Michigan next week to continue the Christmas celebrations… To all a good night .

BIRTHDAY GIRL

We cannot believe our baby is 3 years old today! Maeve had a super fun party at Pump It Up this morning, bouncing around with her friends. Then she enjoyed her new scooter when we got home! We are blessed to be able to celebrate with so many family and friends, and lucky to have such a happy and healthy little girl. Many pictures have been posted to the gallery – the party and the general shots from the weekend are in separate folders…

A breakthrough?

It’s too soon to say if it’s the beginning of a solid trend, but we had a major potty breakthrough today. Maeve, after running around naked in the backyard and playing in the pool this afternoon, proactively told us she needed to go to the bathroom. She proceeded to have peeps on the potty 5 (FIVE!!!) times total today – all initiated by her realizing she had to go! 2 times before dinner, 2 times before bath, and 1 time before bed. We are so proud of her!!! Stay tuned for more progress as we approach her 3rd birthday this weekend…

Maeve’s 1st charitable donation

Maeve's 1st charitable donation

We are so proud of Maeve – she saved all the change from her piggy bank this summer to become a Change Maker! She donated all of it ($51.12!) today to Eric & Kathy’s 10th Annual 36-Hour Radiothon for Children’s Memorial Hospital. We feel so fortunate that Maeve is healthy and we have not had to go to Children’s…but we could not be more thankful to know that it is there. We support the Radiothon every year (airing now through Saturday at 6 p.m.) because the stories are both inspiring and heartbreaking. Children’s Memorial Hospital never turns a family away when their child needs service and the doctors conduct research that will hopefully prevent life-threatening illnesses and save children’s lives. If you feel compelled, please join us: WTMX.
